Pressure washer hoses often develop stubborn kinks, especially after being stored tightly or twisted during use. Kinks reduce water flow, weaken the hose structure and can lead to splits if not dealt with properly. This guide shows how to safely unkink your hose without causing further damage.
1. Stretch The Hose Out Fully
Before unkinking, disconnect the hose and lay it straight on the ground. Pull both ends gently to remove slack. This helps reveal where the twists are.
2. Use The “Walk-Out” Method
Starting at the spray-gun end, walk the hose out towards the pressure washer while gently rotating it. This naturally removes twists along the length of the hose.
Tip: Professional cleaners use this technique because it works for most kinks instantly.
3. Warm The Hose To Restore Flexibility
Cold or old hoses kink more easily. Place the hose in warm sunlight for 10–20 minutes, or run warm water over the kinked section. The warmth softens the material, allowing the kink to relax.
4. Loosen Tight Kinks By Hand
For stubborn kinks, bend the hose gently in the opposite direction. Avoid sharp bends — slow pressure helps the internal layers realign without damage.
5. Use Large Loops To Prevent New Kinks
After unkinking the hose, coil it in wide, even loops. Storing it this way prevents the kink from returning and keeps the hose flexible.
6. Replace Hoses With Permanent Kinks
If a kink has flattened or hardened, it may create a weak spot. Replace the hose if you notice:
- Permanent flat spots
- Reduced water flow
- Visible cracks forming around the kink
- Frequent kinking in the same place
A new hose improves performance and prevents breaks during high-pressure use.
